TOI MĀORI
Discovering inspiration at every corner
Teaching traditional Maori arts holds profound significance for Maori communities, contributing to the preservation and revitalization of cultural heritage. Engaging in these arts not only connects individuals to their ancestral roots but also fosters a sense of identity, pride, and belonging. Beyond cultural preservation, the practice of traditional arts offers numerous mental health benefits. Through the creative process, individuals can find solace, expression, and a means of coping with life's challenges. Artistic endeavors provide avenues for self-discovery, mindfulness, and stress relief, promoting overall mental well-being within Maori communities.
Workshops + Wananga
Our raranga (weaving) and toi Māori (Māori arts) workshops and wānanga (learning sessions) play a vital role in nurturing mental health and well-being within our community. By engaging in these traditional arts and practices, participants connect deeply with their cultural heritage, fostering a sense of belonging and identity. The rhythmic motions of weaving and the creative expression through art provide therapeutic outlets for stress relief and emotional healing. Moreover, these workshops serve as spaces for intergenerational knowledge transfer, where rangatahi (youth) and community members learn from kaumātua (elders), strengthening familial bonds and community cohesion. Teaching traditional arts ensures the preservation of cultural practices, empowering individuals with a sense of pride and purpose. Through these meaningful activities, we not only enrich our cultural heritage but also promote holistic well-being for ourselves and future generations.
